El empresario venezolano Franklin Durán se mantuvo quieto y mirando al frente mientras un jurado de Miami lo declaró culpable la semana pasada de ser un agente ilegal de Venezuela en territorio estadounidense. Podría ser sentenciado a 15 años de cárcel.
Pero mientras Durán no mostraba emoción alguna en los juzgados, en Venezuela el autor intelectual de su delito, el presidente Hugo Chávez, se salía de sus casillas.
El problema para Chávez es que durante casi una década, los demócratas latinoamericanos han acusado a Venezuela de vulnerar la soberanía de sus vecinos al apoyar a la izquierda radical con dinero y armas. Chávez lo ha negado.
Ahora llega la condena de Durán, que ha revelado que se canalizaron considerables contribuciones financieras del gobierno de Chávez a la candidata peronista Cristina Kirchner en la contienda presidencial de Argentina en 2007. Para Chávez, quien parece estar trabajando en varios proyectos similares en la región, la publicidad negativa es demoledora.
